My name is Juan Pablo. I built The Animal Map because I kept asking myself the same question: which animals would I actually encounter if I visited a given country?
I've traveled to around 30 countries, from Japan to Morocco and Algeria, including journeys across the Sahara and years living in different parts of Europe. Every time I arrived somewhere new, I wanted to know what wildlife I might actually come across. I never found a tool that answered that question in a simple, visual way, so I built one.
The site covers 300 species across 174 countries and 5 US regions. Each species is researched using sources such as the IUCN Red List, scientific literature, and regional field guides.
The goal isn't to list every species that exists in a country. It's to show the ones you're most likely to actually encounter, or the ones worth knowing about before you go.
When I find a mistake or when a species' conservation status changes, I update it. If you want to suggest an animal, report an error, or just say hi, write to theanimalmap@gmail.com.
