- Striated Caracara
The Striated Caracara (Phalcoboenus australis) is a unique bird of prey found primarily in the Falkland Islands and remote southern South America. It is a medium-sized raptor, about 53-65 cm (21-26 inches) long, with dark brown plumage, a pale face, and orange legs. Unlike many raptors, it is highly terrestrial and omnivorous, known for its curious and bold behavior, often approaching humans. Its diet is very broad, including carrion, insects, eggs, nestlings, and even small mammals. They are highly intelligent and opportunistic, often scavenging along coastlines and near penguin colonies.
