  Black bears are medium-sized bears, typically characterized by their black fur (though color can vary), small, rounded ears, and a relatively straight facial profile. While the American Black Bear is widespread in North America, the Asiatic Black Bear (Ursus thibetanus), also known as the Himalayan Black Bear or Moon Bear, is found across Asia from Iran to Japan. Asiatic Black Bears typically weigh 60-200 kg (130-440 lbs) and have a distinctive white crescent-shaped mark on their chest. They are omnivores, feeding on fruits, nuts, insects, and small mammals, and are more arboreal than brown bears. They are vulnerable due to habitat loss and poaching.
