The Mediterranean Monk Seal (Monachus monachus) is a highly endangered species of seal, native to the Mediterranean Sea, the coast of northwest Africa, and the Black Sea. It is one of the most critically threatened marine mammals in the world. These seals have a distinctive dark brown or grey coat, a lighter belly patch, and a robust body, typically measuring 2-2.8 meters (6.5-9 feet) in length and weighing 250-400 kg (550-880 lbs). They primarily feed on fish and cephalopods. Mediterranean Monk Seals are shy and often seek refuge in sea caves, facing severe threats from habitat loss, entanglement in fishing gear, and human disturbance.
